Who Knew?

Steve Friesen, director of the Buffalo Bill Museum on Lookout Mountain, and I unveiled Goldie’s wedding dress as part of History Colorado’s current project, Who Knew? After the unveiling the dress was moved upstairs and will be on display for a while alongside Baby Doe’s dress and other garments from Colorado’s history. As you can see, Goldie’s wedding outfit has faded from its original fabulous red, but it’s still stunning, and the beadwork by some of the Sioux women who were also in Buffalo Bill’s show at the time is in amazingly good...

Just after Goldie married Harry Sterling (a.k.a. Harry Smith and Harry Walters) they were involved in an accident while performing in the holdup skit with the Deadwood stagecoach during a Buffalo Bill Wild West show. It was a grisly accident, and Goldie’s new husband Harry was driving. The stagecoach landed on its side, and Goldie’s friend, Arline Finn, was dragged beneath the coach.
